Jon Scieszka Books Overview

Knights of the Kitchen Table

Joe’s been caught up in a book before, but this is ridiculous! Joe’s Book, a gift from his magician uncle, doesn’t just tell stories, it zaps Joe and his friends Sam and Fred right into the middle of them. And when these thoroughly modern kids meet King Arthur and become Knights of the Round Table, the result can only be thoroughly amusing mayhem.

The Not-so-Jolly Roger

Joe, Fred, and Sam are really up a tree this time. Literally. Not only has Joe’s Book set them down in a coconut tree, but the tree’s surrounded by pirates! Their choices: join Blackbeard’s crew, walk the plank, or become coconut stew! What can a time traveler say but, ‘Yo ho ho and a bottle of ginger ale’?

The Good, the Bad, and the Goofy

The first four books of the wildly popular Time Warp Trio series are now in one value priced boxed set! Whether the gang’s fighting off the Black Knight in the middle of Camelot, practicing magic tricks on Blackbeard and his pirates, stampeding cattle in the Old West, or running from a woolly mammoth, one thing is for sure: no one’s ever bored when the Time Warp Trio’s around!

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Three friends, Sam, Joe, and Fred travel through time having action packed, outlandish adventures. The snappy dialogue and classic ”boy” humor in this series of chapter books will engage the most reluctant readers.

Summer Reading is Killing Me!

Joe, Fred, and Sam have no idea why they’ve been transported to a playground. All they know is that there’s a 250 pound chicken and it’s headed straight for them. While Joe’s racking his brains for the magic words to stop a charging chicken, he suddenly has a flash of what’s going to happen next. It’s exactly like the book he just read. Turns out Fred put their summer reading list inside The Book the magic one, that is and now they’re destined to spend their summer living stories that were only meant to be read. Only one thing is clear: writing a back to school book report will be no sweat. Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith also collaborated on Math Curse, The Stinky Cheese Man, and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. Jon Scieszka lives in Brooklyn, New York. Lane Smith lives in New York City.

It’s All Greek to Me

Wouldn’t you know it, right when the trusty Time Warp Trio are about to go on stage in their school play, their script gets knocked into The Book, and Joe, Fred, and Sam land smack in the middle of a feud between the gods of Ancient Greece and some really ugly monsters. To keep their odyssey from becoming a Greek tragedy, the gang needs to find The Book, and fast!

See You Later, Gladiator

One minute the guys are wrestling around in Joe’s room, the next minute The Book has transported them back to ancient Rome and face to face with one big old gladiator. Luckily Joe, Sam and Fred, the Time Warp Trio, have seen enough professional wrestling to make it through gladiator school but not even a bodyslam can help them at the Colosseum. Will our trusty heroes be able to find The Book and hightail it out of there or will the Romans turn them into mincemeat first? ‘ The Time Warp Trio’s tongue in cheek humor, laced with understatement and wordplay, makes for laugh out loud reading.’ School Library Journal, starred review

Sam Samurai

Joe, Sam, and Fred have conquered the summer reading list, Greek monsters, and Roman gladiators, but a haiku writing assignment lands them in what might be their scariest adventure yet! Samurai warriors, really big swords, and three twenty first century kids are a dangerous combination…
unless one of the boys can figure out a way to find the book and get them back home before disaster strikes. Joe’s Time Travel Haiku: So what cranks the book? What triggers the time warping? Almost anything! ‘Told at a quicksilver pace, the stories are furious and funny…
. T hese volumes will be requested time after time.’ Booklist

Viking It and Liking It

Did you know that our word Thursday comes from the Viking god Thor…
as in Thor’s Day? Neither did the Time Warp Trio. Did you know that if you say ‘Thursday’ over and over again too close to a certain magic Book, you will get sucked back to a. d. 1000 when the Vikings lived? Neither did the Time Warp Trio. Joe, Sam, and Fred are in for a wild ride as they set sail with Leif Erickson, share in a Viking feast of whale blubber, and match wits with Grim Snake in the Grass while trying to find the ever elusive Book and get back home.

Hey Kid, Want to Buy a Bridge?

Joe, Sam, and Fred are really good at meeting people, making friends and enemies in all different places and times. But this time everything is completely different! It’s Brooklyn, it’s the 1880s, and some crazy guy’s trying to build a bridge all the way across to Manhattan. Meanwhile, their great granddaughters, who have inherited The Book are doing a little time traveling of their own, and they need some help. The guys just want to get back to their simple, ordinary twenty first century lives. But will they find a way out before things get too far out of hand? ‘You say there’s nothing in your library for boys to read? Never fear, the Time Warp Trio is here.’ Booklist

Me Oh Maya

One minute Joe, Sam, and Fred are shooting hoops in Brooklyn; the next they’re on a court that is definitely not in New York, and surrounded by a bunch of players wearing feathered headdresses and not much else. And the other team is saying something about losers being the next blood sacrifices. Uh oh. Tossed back in time to Chich n Itz , Mexico, in the year A.D. 1000, the Time Warp Trio is at it again. But can the guys score and find The Book before the Mayan High Priest and his team force them into ‘sudden death’ overtime?

Da Wild, Da Crazy, Da Vinci

You probably know that Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Did you know that he also invented an early version of a helicopter and a tank, and that he planned to execute the Time Warp Trio for spying on his inventions? Sam’s bright idea to look for the inventor of the Book takes the guys to 15th century Italy to meet up with Leonardo. But it’s going to take at least three more bright ideas, two magic tricks, and one great invention to get them out of trouble and safely back home. If not, it could be a lifetime of Italian army toilet cleaning detail for Joe, Sam, and Fred.

Oh Say, I Can’t See

I cannot tell a lie, said general george washington. the time warp trio helped me cross the Delaware river and surprise the enemy troops. so how did Christmas eve in the twenty first century turn into Christmas Day in 1776? well, it was sort of an accident. And for once, it wasn t Joe s, sam s, and Fred’s fault! Can American history survive the time warp trio? you ll just have to ask sam s time warping great granddaughter samantha…
and her leaky cat.

Marco? Polo!

Did you ever wonder what might happen if someone had a time warping book they got from their uncle who was a magician and they took it to the local YMCA pool while they played Marco? Polo! with their two best friends? Well, wonder no more. In the sixteenth adventure of the Time Warp Trio, it happens to Joe and Fred and Sam. And what happens is: sandstorms, desert bandits, a smelly camel, strange horoscopes, the emperor of all China, hungry hunting dogs, attack leopards, killer hawks, and one very famous if he doesn t get lost explorer. If the explorer is Marco Polo, this must be 13th century China. And the Time Warp Trio’s horoscope says, ‘Beware of mean cats, mad dogs, and even madder Chinese astrologers.’

Squids Will Be Squids

Sure we’d all love to be able to go around telling stories about all the weird, scary, and just plain annoying people that we know. But the truth is, no one likes a gossip. Here, the irrepressible Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith have found a way around that problem they just make like Aesop and change all the people to animals or food, add a moral to each story, and call the stories fables! With tales like ‘Little Walrus,’ in which too much of the truth is a dangerous thing, the cautionary ‘Slug’s Big Moment,’ wherein Slug is so caught up in herself that she doesn’t see the steamroller behind her, and ‘Straw and Matches,’ which illustrates quite clearly why you should never play with matches because they cheat, the eighteen fables in this uproarious collection are sure to delight readers both young and old. Illustrated by Lane Smith.

Baloney

The twisted team that gave the world Squids Will Be Squids and The Stinky Cheese Man now delivers a whole lot of Baloney. Henry P. Baloney. Henry is an alien schoolkid who needs to come up with one very good excuse to explain why he is late for szkola, again. Otherwise, his teacher Miss Bugscuffle promises, it’s Permanent Lifelong Detention. Henry’s tall tale of his lost zimulis received from deep space by Jon Scieszka is told in at least twenty different Earth languages and graphically recreated in Lane Smith’s out of this world illustrations. The unbelievable trip into Henry’s wild universe may be the most original excuse ever for being late for szkola. Or it might just be Baloney. Henry P. Baloney.

Science Verse

‘Amoeba’

Don’t ever tease a wee amoeba

By calling him a her amoeba.

And don’t call her a him amoeba.

Or never he a she amoeba.

‘Cause whether his or hers amoeba,

They too feel like you and meba.

What if a boring lesson about the food chain becomes a sing aloud celebration about predators and prey? A twinkle twinkle little star transforms into a twinkle less, sunshine eating and rhyming Black Hole? What if amoebas, combustion, metamorphosis, viruses, the creation of the universe are all irresistible, laugh out loud poetry? Well, you’re thinking in Science Verse, that’s what. And if you can’t stop the rhymes…
the atomic joke is on you. Only the amazing talents of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, the team who created Math Curse, could make science so much fun.

Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland

The fantastical tale of a young girl chasing her White Rabbit has delighted children since Lewis Carroll wrote it generations ago. Here his Wonderland shines anew, viewed through the looking glas*ses of two incomparable artists. Mary Blair’s vibrant art helped shape the look of Walt Disney s classic animated film. Collected in a picture book for the first time, her illustrations capture the essence of such memorable characters as the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter with stunning immediacy. Jon Scieszka s captivating text celebrates all that is curious and all that is nonsensical about the world that holds Alice spellbound, from a deliciously absurd tea party to the spectacle of a kingdom of playing cards . Brim*ming with wit and wonder, this sparkling retelling will enchant readers from the moment Alice falls down the rabbit hole, whether or not they ve made the journey before.

Seen Art?

It all started when I told my friend Art I would meet him on the corner of Fifth and Fifty Third. I didn’t see him. So I asked a lady walking up the avenue, ‘Have you Seen Art??’ ‘MoMA?’ asked the lady. ‘Uh…
no, he’s just a friend.’ ‘Just down Fifty Third Street here. In a beautiful new building. You can’t miss it.’ When this address turns out to be the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, confusion and hilarity ensue. As the narrator continues looking for Art inside MoMA, he is introduced to well known pieces of art such as Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Matisse’s The Red Studio, as well as works by Picasso, Klee, Lichtenstein and others. In a dynamic collaboration that features comical text and playful illustrations alongside full color reproductions of the artwork, Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith give readers the perfect companion for a visit to MoMA, and an introduction to some of the world’s best works of modern art.
