FIENNES, CELIA. MORRIS, CHRISTOPHER, edited by.  27.08 AbebooksUK Marrins Bookshop  [publisher: The Cresset Press,, London] 8vo. 5.5 x 8 inches. xlv + [v] + 376 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in dust wrapper, which has small missing section at head of spine; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 2 maps and 2 genealogical tables. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Celia Fiennes' account of her various journeys throughout England (with brief forays into Wales and Scotland) between about 1685 and 1703 provides a fascinating and readable description of the country in the late Stuart period. The book falls into four parts, the early journeys in the south (c.1685-96), the northern journey and the tour of Kent (1697), the great journey to Newcastle and to Cornwall (1698) and London and the later journeys (c.1701-1703). The tour of Kent includes a journey down the Dover Road to Canterbury (with descriptions of silk weaving and papermaking) and Dover and thence to Deal, Maidstone, Rochester and Dartford. There is also an account of taking the waters at Tunbridge Wells. Fiennes (1662-1741) also devotes many pages to describing the country houses and cathedrals. A fine copy of the definitive edition of Celia Fiennes' journeys, edited by Christopher Morris (1906-1993), historian and fellow of King's College, Cambridge.
