The purpose of this book is to examine the extent to which, and the means by which, the work of the individual Lysias can be distinguished within the total corpus ascribed to him. One part of the examination is an attempt to reconstruct the entire process of transmission, from the making of the late Roman selection, through the internal arrangement of the corpus in the ancient editions, to the relation between client and consultant at the time of writing. The other part is an evaluation of criteria of authenticity: chronological, ideological, and stylistic. Chronological indications are commonly inadequate; the ideology of an individual in Lysias's time was probably more elastic than is sometimes supposed; and the extant speeches are too small for the application of simple stylometric tests. Allowance must also be made for the adjustment of the style of a speech to the personality of the client, and for the co-operation of the client in the composition of the speech. The conclusion of the book is that any demand for a clear division of the speeches into two categories, authentic and spurious, is unreasonable and methodologically unsound; we must content ourselves with degrees of probability and treat the corpus as presenting us not with an individual but with certain aspects of Athenian art and society. Professor Dover poses the question: 'to what extent, and by what means, is it possible to isolate the work of Lysias himself within the very large number of speeches ascribed to him?' Dover's answer is novel, alarming, and plausible. It is achieved by subtle and penetrating argument, the precise manipulation of stylistic techniques, and above all (.) intellectual common sense and the ability to look at old problems with new, unprejudiced eyes. (.) In Britain we have waited a long time since Jebb for a though-provoking, progressive, detailed study about Lysias. This Dover has now provided, and with its emphasis on methodology we shall never again be able to fall back so comfortably on the flabby cushions of subjective impressions.' (W.G.
