Colin Tudge is a wonderful writer on nature and the biological sciences. In this and his many other books - The Tree, for example - he shares his wide and deep knowledge in an entertaining and highly accessible way. Thus, far from being dry and “academic”, his books may be described as page-turners. Certainly, at over 600 pages, The Variety of Life may look intimidating. But excellent illustrations and informative charts break up the text into easily manageable chunks. Besides, with a scope as wide as all life on Earth, there is a whole lot to cover. Warmly recommended.
