        Publisher's Note:
The landscape painter Charles Henri Joseph Leickert was born in Brussels in 1816 and died in Mainz in 1907. He lived and worked in the Netherlands throughout most of his life. As the most important pupil of Andreas Schelfhout, he gained renown as painter of Romantic summer- and winter-landscapes and muted river and beach scenes. In addition, he painted cityscapes. His works are beloved by connoisseurs and collectors of nineteenth-century painting and grace numerous public and private collections in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, the United States, and elsewhere. This first monograph on Charles Leickert is based on extensive art historical research. The author, Harry Kraaij, places the painter in the context of artistic developments in the Netherlands. He reviews Leickert's biographical data in chronological order, interspersing these with information concerning the master's training, the influence of his teachers, and the critical reception and marketing of his work. Leickert's contacts with other artists, such as Andreas Schelfhout, Wijnand Nuyen and Charles Rochussen, are examined in detail as well. This book, which appears under the auspices of prominent art historians from the Dutch museum world, includes a convenient biography, an ample bibliography, and an index. The more than seventy-five handsome reproductions, most of them in splendid colour, that illustrate this volume provide a representative cross section of Leickert's oeuvre, which, in addition to the oil paintings, consists of academic drawings, oil sketches, water colours, prints, and drawings.
