        Publisher's Note:
This richly illustrated volume sets out to document the activity of Leonardo's pupils and followers in Lombardy, the region where the Tuscan artist had perhaps his greatest following without having either a 'school' in the most academic sense of the term, or an actual bottega, or 'workshop,' in the Florentine sense. The strongly innovative element, the 'modern manner' introduced by Leonardo to an arcs chat in many ways was still closely tied to the late Gothic or at most a still immature interpretation of the Renaissance, also unexpectedly stimulated a desire amongst the Lombard artists to adapt themselves to the da Vinci style seen as both modern and 'natural.' The volume opens with an introductory essay focusing the problem of the relationship between execution and theory as, more frequently than is generally believed, Leonardo was given to theorising on artistic skill. There follow the monographic essays dedicated to the group of pupils and followers of the first and second generations including the most direct disciples of Leonardo, such as Marco d'Oggiono and Boltraffio, and other interesting figures, from Boltraffio to Giovanni Agostino da Lodi, Cesare Magni, Bernardino Luini, Cesare da Sesto, Andrea Solario. This is the most complete, recent and revised volume devoted to Leonardo da Vinci's disciples; otherwise it is possible to find monographies for each artist.
